INDIA

Mysore, India, October 1999.
That night, after embracing the family that hosted us for days, we set off toward the bus station. A bungalow on Varkala beach awaited us.
The bus was late, and we, seated on the steps, watched the vibrant nightlife unfold.
Elderly men with flowing beards perched atop heaps of boxes and bags, men struggling with enormous bundles bound by makeshift ropes, stray dogs and crows hunting for scraps, children with radiant smiles, parents holding their hands, all searching for the ride that would take them home, cows, chickens, sweet scent of incense, murmured prayers, a fragrant pulsing sea, a dancing humanity.
Hypnotized by this colorful spectacle, we had not noticed them at first. Like feathers carried by a gentle breeze, four young women appeared before us. The eldest, not more than thirty, held a four-year-old in her arms, while the other two, aged eight and ten, stood beside her. They surrounded us, smiles bright on their faces, and we smiled back.
The tiny hands of the little one dove into his beard, while the other two grasped my right hand, tracing the lines of my palm with their delicate fingers. I was speechless.
After a rapid exchange of words I couldn’t grasp, the eldest asked one sister to translate for me.
Do you work?
Meeting her dark eyes, my hand captured in her. I nodded.
What? This hand? Ahh… You no work!
It all became clear. Grinning and gesturing like a monkey, I explained that I work more with my mind than with my hands.
A long silence, broken by uproarious laughter, replied to me. They not only doubted me, they laughed at me. I was astonished. Eyes wide open, my captive hand, I joined them.
Moments later, the eldest, gentle yet firm, passed me the little one in her arms.. I crossed their circle of trust. We had become sisters.
